In the 21st century, Barca attracted the attention of their children. Messi, Xavi, Iniesta, Puyol – These players have changed the world of football. But with them, of course, the team has also got some acquired players.

The Spanish edition Marca has listed the 11 transfers who failed to live up to their hopes in the team:

Richard Dutruel

Barca bought Richard Dutruel in 2000. The goalkeeper was supposed to be number one in the club. But the Frenchman could not compete with Pepe Reina. In two years, Dutruel has played just 15 games and left the club in 2002.

Martin Caceres; Dmytro Chygrynskiy and Thomas Vermaelen

The club bought Martin Caceres – 21-year-old Uruguayan with high hopes in 2008. But, unfortunately, the South American defender failed to justify the advances given to him.

Dmytro Chygrynskiy – Ukrainian defender, whom Barca bought for 25 million, became one of the biggest disappointments.

Thomas Vermaelen-Belgian defender played only one game in the 2014-15 season, also in the last round against Deportivo. His main problem was trauma. The central defender was banished to Rome. After that, he returned and took part in several matches.

Yerry Mina and Alex Song

Barca bought Yerry Mina from Palmeiras for 20 million in January 2018. But in August of 2018, the club sent the defender to Everton.

Alex Sung-Cameroon midfielder, spent all his time when belonging to Barcelona, loaned to West Ham.

Andre Gomes

There was a great interest in Valencia’s former player. Finally, Barcelona beat everyone and paid 35 million euros for the midfielder. As a result of the 2016-17 seasons, Marca named him the worst acquisition in La Liga. Finally, Barcelona sent the player to Everton on loan.

Ricardo Quaresma; Juan Roman Riquelme and Philippe Coutinho

The 19-year-old Portuguese midfielder, Ricardo Quaresma, was considered one of the most promising players in Europe. Barcelona has paid € 6m to Sporting for him, but he spent just one season at Frank Rijkaard’s Barca.

Despite his great talent, Juan Roman Riquelme has never been a favorite of Louis van Gaal. The Dutchman did not allow him to appear and eventually let him go to Villarreal.

Brazilian Philippe Coutinho was bought for € 160m. Though, he spent just 18 months in Blaugrana. Despite a good start, he was eventually released from the team. Currently, Coutinho is playing in Bayern Munich.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic

In 2009, Barcelona spent 70 million euros on buying Swedish center-back. Zlatan did not look bad. That was confirmed with his 15 goals in a single season. But then he struggled with Guardiola, which is why he left the club.
