Augsburg coach, Heiko Herrlich breaks quarantine rules and goes to purchase toothpaste. The coach will, therefore, miss Bundesliga restart.
German Bundesliga is back and will kick off on 16th May. Among the clubs set to play on this date is Augsburg vs Wolfsburg. Unfortunately, Augsburg’s coach will not be present to watch his side face Wolfsburg after months of football suspension.
The coach, on Thursday, left the team hotel and visited a shop to purchase toothpaste breaking the league rules.
The Bundesliga rules mandate a seven-day quarantine for players and staff before the league resumes after a two-month halt due to coronavirus outbreak.
As it stands, teams preparing for the German league restart this weekend have been staying in quarantine.
“We are in quarantine in the hotel and aren’t really supposed to go out. However, there are situations that just requite it. I had no toothpaste; it was running out. No more skincare cream and then I went in my training uniform to a supermarket nearby.”
Herrlich said his shopping trip didn’t go smoothly. First, he forgot his face mask in the hotel room and went back for it. He then had to ask a cashier to change a 20-euro bill into coins so that he could pay the deposit on a shopping cart. The coach then forgot the cart and went back to collect it. Many shops in Germany require customers to use a cart to promote social distancing.
Herrlich admitted he made a mistake by leaving the hotel in a statement.
“I made a mistake by leaving the hotel. Even though I have followed all hygiene measures both when leaving the hotel and otherwise, I cannot undo this. In this situation, I was not able to act as a role model for my team and the public.”
“I will, therefore, be consistent and stand by my mistake. Because of this misconduct, I will not be leading the training on Friday and will not be in charge of the team against Wolfsburg on Saturday.”
