Barca confirms Griezman’s injury
Barcelona have confirmed that Antoine Griezmann has suffered a muscle injury and will miss its LaLiga campaign. The 29-year-old started for Quique Setien’s team as they beat Real Valladolid 1-0 on Saturday. But had to be replaced part-time, with Luis Suarez coming on to partner Leo Messi upfront. Setien confirmed after the game that France’s international asked to leave the pitch because he experienced some discomfort after the first half. Griezmann had to undergo a scan of his right leg on Sunday, which showed that he was injured. So the Catalan side are not sure how long he will be kept inoperative. “Tests this morning showed that the player of the first team, Antoine Griezmann, had a muscle injury in the quadriceps of his right leg,” the statement on the club’s website confirms.
Griezmann, at least, will be unavailable for Thursday’s match against Osasuna. But will most likely miss the final clash with Alaves on July 19. Griezmann, who joined the Camp Nou from Atletico Madrid last summer, scored nine goals in 35 games in LaLiga this term. Antoine’s injury will likely see Suarez return to starting XI in the previous two matches. As Setien confirmed on Saturday that he was resting after playing five games in a row. The Catalan side is second in the Spanish top flight and trail leaders Real Madrid by one point. Then, Barca will pay attention to their campaign in the Champions League. Which will resume on August 8, when they face Napoli in the second leg of their last-16 tie.
Two sides drew 1-1 in Italy’s first match in February before the suspension of the competition due to the coronavirus pandemic.
