Former striker Alan Smith has his doubts about the 22-year-old as he feels he could end up like former Barcelona midfielder Denis Suarez was on loan at the Emirates.

Martin Odegaard had his problems of development at Real Madrid

Arsenal intend to complete the loan signing of Real Madrid playmaker Martin Odegaard, though not everyone around the club is happy. Former striker Alan Smith has his doubts about the 22-year-old as he feels he could end up like former Barcelona midfielder Denis Suarez was on loan at the Emirates. “He’s had his problems developing at Real Madrid, and the last thing Arsenal want is to get someone who can’t offer anything,” Smith told reporters. “You think back to Denis Suarez who came to the club and was physically unprepared and then he got injuries. It was a bit embarrassing after all, so hopefully, they will do their homework on Odegaard. Smith feels they need a proven player at the highest level, like former Tottenham star Christian Eriksen.

Arsenal have one hand tied because of their financial problems

“He’s a young player that went to Real Madrid, and so much is expected of him, and as often happens, it doesn’t quite materialize like that,” added Smith. “But they were looking for more creativity. Emile Smith Rowe has provided that. They were linked to Christian Eriksen as well the other day. “So it is that kind of player who can make a difference against a deep-lying defence that’s defending in numbers. I didn’t expect him to start a lot of games, someone who can dip in and out perhaps”. However, Smith believes Odegaard might be the best to get given the current economic climate and low league position. “Arsenal have almost one hand tied behind their backs because financially they cannot throw money at it, so they have to be pretty creative in getting these loans in,” he said.

“Dani Ceballos was brought from Real Madrid, and they have got that relationship. Ceballos did a good job during his time at the Emirates, I think so hopefully Odegaard could come, and he has the sense to prove, and he can add something to what they have got.”
