He must go under the knife as a preventative measure after complaining of irritation on his right patellar tendon earlier this season. Ter Stegen played through the discomfort to end the extended 2019-20 season but will take advantage of the short break before the new campaign to fix it once and for all. “Based on the exchange with the medical team, first-team player Marc ter Stegen will do a voluntary medical intervention on Tuesday on his right patellar tendon conducted by the expert Dr. Ramon Cugat,” read an announcement on the club’s website.

“This is a proactive measure that is now being done to prevent and prepare for the future as the player had some tendon irritation at the start of the season”. Ter Stegen also confirmed his surgery on Twitter, saying, “I will undergo an intervention for my knee-tendon. The medical experts and I discussed this ‘clean-up’ as there were some irritations earlier this season. It will take me a few weeks to recover and return to 100%. I am calm and positive about the situation. I will be back soon. Thanks again for all the support I received. I appreciate this!” The German goalkeeper made 46 appearances for Barça last season. However, the campaign ended on a disastrous note of 8-2 thrash at the hands of Bayern Munich in the Champions League semi-finals last week.

It means Barcelona finished the season without a trophy for the first time in 12 years. With head coach Quique Setien being sacked earlier Monday. Former Barcelona midfielder Ronald Koeman has had a close relationship with his job. So the Dutchman is expected to step down as head coach of the Netherlands in the coming days to take over at the Camp Nou.
