Barcelona want Leo Messi to stay

Those at Barcelona want Leo Messi to stay put and win more Ballons d’Or and Champions leagues, and Toni Nadal has shown that Victor Font will strive to make those dreams come true if he wins the presidential election in the club. With Josep Maria Bartomeu losing control of the Camp Nou, a new figure will be delivered at the end of January 2021. Several contenders are in the frame to take on prominent roles in the most demanding of sporting boardrooms, and Font is the leading contender with great ambition for the club. Part of his plan includes keeping the talismanic captain Messi in Catalonia, with Toni Nadal – among those who could take a position next to him.

Messi is motivated and at a good level

He told reporters about the efforts to tie Messi to a new contract after seeing the South American push to move elsewhere over the summer: “I don’t know if I see myself as capable, but I’ll try to be sure. I wish they would allow me to try. I would like him to win another Champions League with us by winning the Ballon d’Or. And I would like him to help us do an exciting project”. Nadal claims that there was no indication from Messi that his head turned upside down. And the 33-year-old is considered as important as ever in 2020-21. “In the games, I saw him, I see Messi motivated and at a good level,” Toni continued.

Lionel will not last forever…

“I always trust the best, and Lionel Messi has been the best in the world for many years. And he continues to be, and I am convinced that he still has a lot of satisfaction to give the club”. He added on long-term planning with and without great all the time: “For now we have to try and enjoy having Messi there”. Unfortunately, Leo will not last forever and will leave a big void for all of us who have enjoyed him for so many years. There is no other option, the club is over 100 years old, he was without Messi, and at some point, unfortunately, we will have to be without him again, so we have to prepare well”. Nadal believes Barca already have several potential successors to Messi’s crown, and exciting youngsters such as Ansu Fati, Pedri and Trincao are looking to unleash further potential.

“Being another Messi is very difficult for anyone,” Nadal said. “It’s almost impossible. Being the best in history is very difficult. Any athlete should try and do to reach his maximum level. But it will rarely be Messi, although I think Ansu Fati is a great player and due to his age and talents. Fati is one of the possible great stars of the post-Messi era. Pedri also seems very good to me, and Trincao too.”
