Font runs against reigning Josep Maria Bartomeu, who is under fire after Barça’s stagnation ended with a humiliating 8-2 defeat to Bayern Munich in the Champions League last week.
Font would not have Koeman under his supervision
Barcelona’s presidential candidate Victor Font insisted that Ronald Koeman would not be the club’s coach if he is elected. Even if the Dutchman wins a treble. Font runs against reigning Josep Maria Bartomeu. He is under fire after Barça’s stagnation ended with a humiliating 8-2 defeat to Bayern Munich in the Champions League last week. The loss has already had many consequences: head coach Quique Setien and technical manager Eric Abidal are already leaving. Bartomeu refuses to step down ahead of the presidential elections in March 2021. Bartomeu selected former Barça star Koeman as the club’s new head coach. They confirmed the appointment on Wednesday. But Font made it clear that he would not have the Dutchman under his supervision.
Font says that under his leadership next head coach would be Xavi
“If I am president, the Dutchman will not be a coach,” Font told journalists. “Koeman is a Barcelona legend. We have to say a big thank you to him that with the complexity that exists today in the club and the dressing room. And with the decisions that need to be made, he took on the challenge of being the head coach. We have to wish him every success, and hopefully, we win the treble. If, in the end, it was necessary, and he wanted, he still could somehow contribute to our project. We will apply our project in his main structure from the vice president to the last youth football coach based on an organizational chart that we have been preparing for a long time.”
Font made clear his preference for the next head coach at Barça: the legend of the club Xavi, who is currently at the helm of Al Sadd.
“Xavi understands that all the pieces of the club have to fit together,” Font said. “A board of directors that allows the person running a sports project to do their job. And in our case would be him”. The future of Barça star Lionel Messi has been called into question after a losing season with reports that the Argentine star wants out. On Tuesday, Bartomeu insisted that Messi would stay. Font, meanwhile, expects Messi’s future to be no problem if he is playing under former teammate Xavi. “Messi is completely disappointed with the club’s critical situation, both sportingly and economically and organizationally. I expect Messi will play under Xavi in 2021.”
