Bayern didn’t want Flick to announce his departure now

Bayern Munich have expressed their disappointment in Hansi Flick’s decision to publicly disclose that he wants to leave the club at the end of the season. The 56-year-old announced on Saturday in the wake of his 3-2 win over Wolfsburg that he hopes to terminate his contract, which should last until the summer of 2023. Flick’s announcement came days after Bayern were excluded from the Champions League by Paris Saint-Germain, and amid reports, he is set to replace Joachim Low as Germany boss this summer. While the board of the Bavarian club confirmed that Flick had already informed them of his desire to leave, they did not want him to announce it just now. Statement on the club’s website: “The head coach of Bayern Munich Hansi Flick has announced his desire to terminate the contract, which will last until June 2023, at the end of the current season.”

The Bavarians’ coach is the best candidate to replace Joachim Low

“Hansi Flick informed the executive board of FC Bayern Munich of this desire during the past week. Hansi Flick and Bayern have agreed to focus on matches against Wolfsburg, Bayer Leverkusen and Mainz, to not disrupt the concentration of the whole club on these three important matches. Bayern disapproves of the unilateral communications issued by Hansi Flick and will continue negotiations after the match at Mainz, as agreed.” Although Flick guided Bayern to the European and domestic trebles last season and on track to retake the Bundesliga title this term, his future looked uncertain for months. Flick is considered the best candidate to replace Low after the Germany boss confirmed he would retire after Euro 2020.

While Bayern chief executive officer Karl-Heinz Rummenigge tried to rule out any hope of the manager leaving the club anytime soon, speculation only increased after they were knocked out of the Champions League in the quarter-finals this week. In Germany, it has been reported that the coach has a problematic relationship with Bayern’s sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic. However, earlier this month, Rummenigge said that the paid had repaired their relationship.
