Thibaut Courtois said that he chose to become a goalkeeper because of Iker Casillas.
As you may know, Thibaut Courtois has changed several clubs during his career. The Belgian defended the honor of Atletico Madrid and Chelsea. In summer 2018, he returned to Madrid from the London club, but instead of Atletico, he became a Real Madrid player.
The 27-year-old Belgian was recognized as the best goalkeeper of the 2018 World Cup. In Madrid, good results were expected from him, but the initial period in “Royal Club” was not good, which is why he often had to listen to criticism from the fans.
“I liked watching Iker Casillas.”
Courtois said the decision was made because of Iker Casillas. As a child, he loved the Spanish keeper and the “Royal Club” in general. Thibaut also said that his playing style is very similar to the style of the legendary Dutch goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar.
“I was watching Iker’s games at Real, that’s why I decided to be a goalkeeper. I liked watching him, and I loved Real Madrid. At the age of 14, I was very tall and thin. I started watching Van der Sar’s game because he was closer to my playing style.” Said the Belgian.
According to the contract, Thibaut Courtois will remain in the Spanish capital until the summer of 2024. The 27-year-old goalkeeper has made 24 appearances in La Liga’s 2019/20 season, where he has kept the net dry 12 times and conceded just 16 goals.
