Everton is on the lookout for a new manager after Carlo Ancelotti left for Real Madrid with West Ham coach, David Moyes linked with a return to Goodison Park.
West Ham coach David Moyes could be set for a dramatic return to former club Everton after Carlo Ancelotti walked away to join Real Madrid. The Italian manager effectively forced his way out of Goodison by informing owner, Farhad Moshiri he wanted to return to Real Madrid for “family reasons”.
Those reasons included a huge wage packet to go back to the Bernabeu, after negotiations over the weekend, where he agreed on a deal with the Spanish giants, before asking Everton to release him.
This has opened the way for Moyes to return to Merseyside and the club he managed successfully for 11 years.
The Everton board met late on Tuesday evening to consider a short-list of contenders, which also includes another dramatic name for Blues fans, in the form of a second former boss at the club, Roberto Martinez.
Other names on the short-list include Nuno Espirito Santo who recently left Wolves, Eddie Howe, Sean Dyche, Frank Lampard, and Portuguese coach Vitor Periera.
But Moyes was approached 18 months ago before Ancelotti was appointed, and he has NOT yet signed a new contract with West Ham, despite brilliantly guiding them into the Europa League this season.
Talks are still proceeding over a new three-year deal, with his contract due to expire at the end of June, though there is a 12-month option on both sides after his success in taking the Hammers to sixth in the table, just two points off a Champions League spot.
Ancelotti held talks with Madrid over the weekend and quickly decided he would turn his back on Everton, to take up a contract with the club he previously managed in 2015 thought to be worth £12m.
The Italian said the move represented “an unexpected opportunity”.
He added: “I have complete respect for everyone associated with Everton and hope they can achieve the exciting opportunities they have in front of them.
“While I have enjoyed being at Everton, I have been presented with an unexpected opportunity which I believe is the right move for me and my family at this time.”
Real will present Ancelotti to the media on Wednesday, while Everton said they “will begin the process of appointing a new manager immediately”.
