Chelsea loans out full-back Davide Zappacosta to Italian outfit AS Roma for the 2019/20 season. The defender who arrived in Italy is undergoing a medical with Roma ahead of a season-long loan from Chelsea.

According to Sky in Italy, Roma will not pay for any loan fee. Instead, the club will finance his £2.3m Chelsea wages per season.

Upon his arrival in Rome Fiumicino airport, Davide Zappacosta made his report to the Sky in Italy reporters.

“Returning to my country is very emotional. I miss Italy a lot and I’m happy to return here with Roma.” “I’m feeling like I’m at home here because I live close-by (Sora,71 miles away). I know the sport director, I know how much passion he puts into his work and I know how passionate the fan-base is. The team is very young and I think we can do well” the former Chelsea defender said.

Davide Zappacosta’s Career in Chelsea

The Italian international joined Chelsea from Serie A outfit Torino in the 2017 summer on at four-year deal for £23m. Throughout the years, Zappacosa has not been able to establish himself as a regular at Stamford Bridge. The current captain Cesar Azpilicueta was always ahead of him in the pecking order.

The 27-year-old Davide Zappacosa has featured 35 times for Chelsea, during his debut season in England. However, the right-back made only four Premier League appearances in the 2018/19 season under Maurizio Sarri. He was a part of the squad that won the FA Cup in May 2018. Nevertheless, he was an unused substitute during the 1-0 final victory over Manchester United at Wembley.

The right-back has not featured for Chelsea this season under new head coach Frank Lampard and  surplus to requirements at Stamford Bridge.

Davide Zappacosta will provide competition to club captain Alessandro Florenzi and replace the former Newcastle full-back Davide Santon who is poised to join La Liga side Mallorca.

Will this result in the shortage of right-back for Chelsea?

Despite a shaky start to the new season in the 4-0 defeat away at Manchester United, Captain Cesar Azpilicueta remains Chelsea’s first-choice right-back. Lampard is keen to give youths a chance in this campaign given the club’s transfer ban. He has already handed starts to Mason Mount and Tammy Abraham.
