The Brazilian, Ederson went into City’s final game against Norwich on 15 clean sheets level with Burnley’s Nick Pope knowing a shut-out against the bottom side would see him claim the award.

Norwich ended their season as the lowest league scorers and had lost every game since the restart. The relegated side held the worst away record scoring only seven goals on their travels all season.

So, Ederson would have been confident of winning the Golden Glove for the first time since he narrowly missed on the award last season keeping 20 clean sheets but seeing the trophy awarded to his Brazilian compatriot Alisson who kept 21. Therefore, he had to make excellent saves at Etihad.

At Burnley, Pope failed to keep a clean sheet against Brighton. This meant Ederson held the award outright.

Ederson’s award is a tribute to a number of fine performances for City this season. Although, his recent showings have gathered more attention for his distribution and ball control rather than his shot-stopping.

He is the first City keeper to win the award since Joe Hart’s 14 clean sheets in 2014/15. Hart also won the award for three straight years between 2010/11 and 2012/13 with no other City goalkeeper winning the award since its introduction in 2004.
