The French senate has rejected an amendment to complete the Ligue 1 2019/20 season that was tabled by six French senators.
The Ligue 1 season run smoothly with PSG on the lead until when COVID-19 became the center of attraction. The pandemic resulted in football suspension.
Meanwhile, as other leagues struggled to resume, Ligue 1 prematurely ended their campaign and declared PSG the 2019/20 title winners.
The termination of the season however was faced with criticism while others claimed it was a “rash decision”.
To try and bring back the season, six French senators including four from the Rhone area tabled amendments opening the way for a possible resumption of the 2019/20 Ligue 1 season.
Mr. Savin, Mr. Kern, Mr. Buffer, Ms. Di Folco, Ms. Lamure, and Ms. Forissier fought so that the federation and leagues wishing to resume competition can do so as quickly as possible.
Here is the amendment:
“Amendment No. 242 presented by MM. Savin, KERN and BUFFET, Mmes Di FOLCO and LAMURE and M.FORISSIER.
The delegated sports federations and the professional leagues may decide to resume professional competitions to complete the 2019/20 season.
To do this, they define, under their responsibility, and in agreement with the State, a health protocol adapted to the resumption of competitions. This determines the conditions under which athletes, necessary personnel, and the public can participate in these competitions.
Whilst health is the most important thing in all circumstances, this announcement can be seen as a surprise on at least two aspects. It was made very early and without prior consultation with the sports world.
The leagues and federations thus, in line with their responsibilities, applied the Prime Minister’s decree, without even knowing the reasons which led to such a rapid decision making.
This amendment, therefore, allowed federations and who so wish to envisage a resumption of the championship to end the 2019/20 season, dependent on the opinion of COVID-19 scientific committee, and within the framework of an agreement with the state.”
The French senate response
The amendment was voted to ratify COVID-19 related decision-making in the realm of French sporting federations, within the framework of the bill. However, with all the efforts invested, the French Senate voted to reject the possibility to accept the proposed amendments, and the decision is officially closed.
