Liverpool is running away with the Premier League title this season. With 13 games remaining of the 2019/20 campaign, the Reds sit 22 points clear at the top of the table.
This season, the Premier League title race is a one-horse race. Liverpool leads with 22 points clear at the top. The situation strikes sparks in other teams as Guardiola throws down the gauntlet to Chelsea, Manchester United, Arsenal and Tottenham.
The past two Premier League seasons have belonged to the Citizens. In the Spanish tactician’s second season in English football, it was a record-breaking one for City as they were crowned champions for the third time in six years.
Not only did they finish with a massive 19 points clear of bitter rivals Manchester United. They also broke the record for the number of goals scored, most wins, biggest positive goal difference. City was announced as the first team in the competition’s history to reach 100 points.
Last season provided arguably the tightest title race since 2012. This is when City pipped Liverpool on the final day of the campaign.
While the Reds have maintained their brilliant form which saw them reach 97 points in 2018/19, Guardiola’s side has faltered.
Ahead of Sunday’s encounter with West Ham, the reigning champion find themselves a massive 22 points behind Merseyside outfit with 13 games to go.
Not only are there talks of Klopp’s side emulating Arsenal by going a whole Premier League season unbeaten, but a period of dominance from the Reds could be on the horizon.
Similar was said about City following their triumph in 2018. Guardiola has however urged the rest of the league to take a leaf out of Liverpool’s book to ensure it’s not a one-horse race for the title in years to come.
How long will the success last?
When asked of how long Liverpool’s success can last, Guardiola responded, “A cycle can change. One year ago, the people said we were unstoppable and nobody could beat us. we would maintain this level for four or five years.”
“I don’t know what will happen in the future. We will prepare as well as we can to close this gap.”
“They reduced the game from 25 points two seasons ago. Now the other teams have to do it.”
