A tough match without Lewi and Neuer

Hansi Flick confirmed that Robert Lewandowski and Manuel Neuer would miss the Champions League clash between Bayern Munich and Atletico Madrid. Bayern will travel to Wanda Metropolitano on Tuesday night in safe knowing that they have already qualified in the past 16 as Group A winners. The reigning European champions opened their title defence by beating Atlético 4-0 at the Allianz Arena before beating Lokomotiv Moscow 2-1 in Russia and Red Bull Salzburg 6-2 in Austria. Flick’s squad also picked up a 3-1 win over Salzburg at home to book their spot in the knockout stages. Giving their head coach the chance to call changes for Tuesday’s trip to Spain.

Hansi Flick trust the entire Bayern squad

The German head coach revealed that Bayern’s top scorer Lewandowski was left out of his last squad. Along with first-choice goalkeeper Neuer and in-form midfielder Leon Goretzka. At the same time, Corentin Tolisso is still not quite ready to return from a muscle injury. “I can confirm that Neuer, Lewandowski and Goretzka will not go to Madrid. Tolisso, too, will not be there,” Flick said at a pre-match press conference. “Also, all the players except the long-term injuries of Alphonso Davies and Joshua Kimmich are there”. When asked if he trusts a makeshift team to get a positive result against Atlético, the 55-year-old manager replied: “We trust the entire squad. We look forward to the game. You have the best defence and second-best offence.”

“Plus a coach who has done an excellent job over the past few years. He has taken the team to another level again. It’s a pleasure playing there”. Bayern are heading to their last European outing fresh from their 3-1 win over Stuttgart at the Mercedes-Benz Arena on Saturday. That result allowed Bayern to remain at the top of the Bundesliga standings by 22 points, two ahead of RB Leipzig and three clear from third-placed Bayer Leverkusen. After they meet with Atlético, Bayern will look forward to Leipzig’s arrival at Allianz on Saturday. That fixture comes four days before they wrap up their Champions League group stage campaign at home to Lokomotiv Moscow.
