Lionel Messi’s contract runs until June, but Laporta is confident that he can persuade the Barcelona captain to stay with the club.
Joan Laporta unveiled his sporting project
Joan Laporta has not revealed any potential signings as part of his campaign ahead of the upcoming Barcelona presidential election, scheduled for March 7. On Thursday, February 25, the former Barcelona president unveiled his sporting project, supported by former Valencia CEO Mateu Alemany and former players José Ramón Alexanko, Sergi Barjuan, Victor Valdes, Rafa Marquez, Deco and Samuel Eto’o. “We had conversations with Mateu, but there is nothing,” Laporta said when asked about Alemany’s potential role in the new board. “I’m sure we can find a way to collaborate on this project.” Lionel Messi’s contract runs until June. But Laporta is confident that he can persuade the Barcelona captain to stay with the club. “For Messi to stay, he must be convinced that Barcelona will continue to win,” added Laporta.
“We Catalans have to be on the side of the team again. I think one of the keys to Messi is staying for him to feel loved again. We want him to smile again. If this happens, we can strive for everything again”. Laporta emphasised that he will not hesitate to make tough decisions if necessary and will manage his reign to bring Barcelona back to the pinnacle of European football. “Out of respect for the professionals who are now working in the club. I want to talk to them when I come,” said Laporta. “Today there are people with whom, in addition to good relations. We had a good experience, and we believe that they can help us. All new milestones imply changes. Our heart rate will not tremble when making decisions.”
“Football has changed, and that’s what we talked about with Mateu Alemany. We have to move forward. We have to be a reference in all areas.”
