Leeds United, who are the three-time English champions are back in the Premier League. Marcelo Bielsa’s team will play in the top division again after a 16-year break.

Leeds hosted Barnsley in the 44th round of the Championship at Eland Road and defeated rivals 1-0. United must have scored at least 1 point in their last two rounds to advance to the Premier League. Marcelo Bielsa’s team has scored 87 points in 44 matches and takes first place in the Championship.

Eventually, their return was accelerated by Huddersfield, who defeated Leeds’s direct rival, West Bromwich, 2-1 in the 45th round of the Championship. The result of this match decided the future of Leeds United.

Slaven Bilic’s West Brom are second with 82 points, one round before the end of the tournament, which means that first-placed Leeds are the champions with 87 points and will play in the English Premier League next season.

Thus, Marcelo Bielsa’s team reached the goal, two rounds before the end of the current season of the Championship. So, after 16 years, they will continue to compete in the Premier League. The 64-year-old Argentine specialist took over the Yorkshire club in 2018.

In the mid-1990s and early 2000s, Leeds United played regularly in the European Cups, reaching the UEFA Cup’s semi-finals and the Champions League. Still, financial problems led the team to relegation in the 2003/04 season. They even dropped to the third division by strength (2007-2010) but managed to return to the Championship after three seasons.
