Leon is happy to play for Bayern alongside Leroy Sane
Leon Goretzka reveals he is looking forward to playing alongside Leroy Sane at Bayern Munich. Sane joined the German and European champions from Manchester City this summer for an initial €49 million. The 24-year-old winger has played in just one competitive match in the past 12 months, making a 10-minute cameo in the Premier League against Burnley after recovering from a cruciate ligament injury. Goretzka has played alongside Sane at Schalke and is looking forward to reuniting with him at Allianz. “I am pleased about it. Leroy and I have known each other and valued each other for many years,” he told reporters. “We both come from Bochum, from the Ruhr area. In our youth years, we played together in the youth system. Now we both play for Bayern. That’s great.”
After the restart, mostly different for Bayern was the mentality
Goretzka, 25, joined the German giants in 2018 and played a crucial role in their domestic and continental treble success last season, scoring eight times in 37 appearances. The Germany international was impressed with the club’s mentality but stressed that they must continue to improve to stay ahead of their rivals. “It’s very inconvenient to play against us and even harder to beat us,” he said. “Our intensity in the game and our pressure on the ball have worked very well lately. Almost all the squads had a hard time, which often led to the fact that we won the ball in the opposing half. What was mostly different for us after the restart was the mentality. That has distinguished Bayern in the past, and we have taken them to the next level. It makes you want to play on this team.
If you look into their faces in the dressing room before the game, you know: it is about to go. “What is good today can no longer work in a week. We are now the hunted all over Europe. The opponents will deal with us even more intensely and try to decipher our system. We must try to make our game even more diverse and develop further.” He continued: “We need a deep squad, especially this season. You have to look at the calendar. We won everything there was to win with the last squad. That was the top squad. Bayern have competent people at the club who do it around the clock. We trust them 100 percent. We are assured that we can win the championship this year as well.
That is also an obvious goal, and of course, it is not surprising when I say that. But other teams have top lineups as well.”
