With uncertainty surrounding the futures of current shot-stoppers, De Gea and Dean Henderson, Manchester United are monitoring Italy star Meret as a replacement option.
Concerns over error-prone David de Gea and a reluctance to make Henderson first-choice means United are keeping tabs on Meret.
De Gea was awarded for his eight years of service at Old Trafford with a lucrative new contract last September. But the Spaniard’s form has since plummeted and his numerous high-profile errors have prompted United chiefs to consider a change of shot-stopper.
Dean Henderson shone during a loan spell at Sheffield United this season and has been tipped to replace the Spaniard De Gea as United first-choice goalkeeper.
However, the 23-year-old Englishman is set on having a starting role and will push for a move if he doesn’t receive assurance from Solskjaer.
According to ESPN, David De Gea to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s eyes is still his No 1 at Old Trafford. This would see Henderson sent out on loan again with Sheffield United keen to extend his stay at Bramall Lane.
Chelsea is interested in Henderson as they look to replace Kepa Arrizabalaga while an extension with the Blades is a possibility.
Sergio Romero will go on with his long spell as United’s experienced back-up as Meret, Napoli’s goalkeeper is the man Solskjaer will turn to if any of the three choose to leave.
The 23-year-old Meret has been capped at every international level from under-16 to full senior star. Meret made his debut in Italy in November last year. He came off the bench in the 9-1 Euro 2020 qualifying win over Armenia.
The shot-stopper has also shared minutes with David Ospina since he joined Napoli from Udinese in 2018. A successful season saw him earn his first Italy cap last November. Similarly, he made a crucial shoot-out save to deny Paulo Dybala’s penalty in the Coppa Italia to hand Napoli victory over Juventus in June.
Moreover, Meret made 22 league appearances as Napoli ended their season in the seventh position in the Serie A.
