Martin is confident that he could play at a much higher level
Martin Braithwaite declares to have been snapped up by Barcelona in a blow €18 million transfer because they always thought he could “play in a lot higher level.” An injury battle at Camp Nou in February 2020 forced the Blaugrana to dip into an emergency recruiting market for attacking reinforcements. The Denmark international Braithwaite was the man they settled on as a deal was done with LaLiga rivals Leganes. The 29-year-old believes he deserves a prominent role in Catalonia, despite questions still being asked of his presence. Braithwaite told reporters about the unique switch that brought him to Barcelona: “They saw that I could play at a much higher level. They could also see that my game was what they needed.”
“It’s also what they told me that I got the mindset of playing in a big club with the pressure. Looking back at it now, it shows that they were right”. Braithwaite has taken in 49 appearances for the Blaugrana, with eight goals recorded in those appearances. Seven of those have come this season, with regular roles enjoyed under Ronald Koeman. Only 11 starts in LaLiga were accepted, with the Dane left the bench 15 times. Braithwaite is pleased with his contribution to the collective effort and believes that working with the likes of Lionel Messi helps him become a better player on a daily basis. He added ahead of Saturday’s Copa del Rey final with Athletic Club: “I think when you surround yourself with high performing people, it only makes you feel the best.”
“I’ve been increasing my performances, jumping up another level. I look at the small details of all the players around me, and it’s just amazing.”
