Neuer will remain Bayern’s N1 goalkeeper next season

Oliver Kahn has reassured Manuel Neuer that he will remain Bayern Munich’s No.1 next season despite the arrival of top-rated Alexander Nubel at the Allianz Arena. The talented 23-year-old goalkeeper negotiated pre-contract terms with the German champions in January. Nubel’s transfer from Schalke has now been completed, and a five-year contract has been awarded in the process. With 53 senior appearances to his name, the skilled goalkeeper is leaning towards a brighter future. However, it will have something to do with the reserve debt in 2020-21, and Kahn – who is now a board member at Bayern Munich – indicates that they will maintain their faith in FIFA World Cup winner Neuer for the foreseeable future. The legendary former keeper told the official Bundesliga website: “I had a little talk with Alexander Nubel.”

Nubel have to try to gain a foothold

“It is a huge step to join Bayern. I experienced it as a player. It’s all about acclimatization, settling here and getting to know his teammates and the coaching team, and then we have to try to gain a foothold – but it is a gradual thing. That means he admits that it may take a year or two for him to take over from Manuel Neuer, who is absolutely No. 1. Last season, you saw how his many outstanding saves contributed to winning the Bundesliga for the eighth time in a row. Neuer saw a move away from Bayern, negotiated at the end of the agreement being placed on the spot for Nubel, but he brought the speculation to an end by signing new terms until the summer of 2023.

There is no desire on the part of the iconic 34-year-old to step aside. Neuer has been a model of consistency throughout his time at Bayern. Over nine memorable years, he made 383 appearances, leading 20 trophy triumphs. Including eight Bundesliga wins and collecting the 2013 Champions League crown. The head coach Hansi Flick has already stated that he intends to continue to trust Neuer going forward. So the Bayern boss said: “Manuel Neuer is our No.1, and nothing will change in the coming season. Alexander Nubel knows about that.” The curtain has not yet come down. Bayern’s efforts in 2019-20, with a plan to complement another domestic crown with the long-awaited Champions League win in August.
