VAR “is not being used well”
Barcelona head coach Quique Setien expressed his belief that there is an idea that VAR “is not being used well” after the controversial victory of Real Madrid over Real Sociedad. Madrid earned a 2-1 win at the Anoeta on Sunday, thanks to goals from the second half from Sergio Ramos and Karim Benzema. Still, they benefited from a series of controversial judging decisions to move above Barca at the Liga summit. Sociedad thought they caught up when Adnan Januzaj shot past Thibault Courtois from a long distance. Still, the goal was excluded for an offside position because Mikel Merino was considered to be blocking Madrid’s goalkeeper’s view. Home side problems were compounded when Benzema found himself in control of the ball with his hand before firing a winning goal in the 70th minute. Benzema eventually cleared of handball after a VAR pitchside review.
Barca have problems with football
On Friday, Barca were held to a 0-0 draw away at Sevilla and now are behind their arch-rivals because of an inferior H2H record heading into the last eight matches of the season. Before meeting Athletic on Tuesday, Setien called for more effective use of VAR to ensure a level playing field. “I focus on us,” said the Barcelona manager at the pre-match press conference”. We have problems with football, but I am happy with a lot of what we are doing. The team has won two and drawn one. We scored six goals and did not miss a single one. But we must use it and have a coherent picture of reality. It is legit to ask why some actions are considered and others not. It may lead to the idea that it is not being used well.”
Subsequently, Setien admitted that Barca could not afford more slippage in pursuit of a third consecutive domestic crown. “But we still have the same points. Real Madrid also cannot make mistakes. Many competitions have been resolved in the last few games. We are behind, but there are eight games left, and we have the same idea to win every game until the last. “I knew that we should win almost everything, just like them.”
