The European football giants (Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, and Inter Milan) have announced a mini-tournament known as the ‘European Solidarity Cup – Football for Heroes’.
All matches are scheduled to take place in their stadiums. The main focus is to raise funds for health care resources in Spain and Italy. Germany is not included in the list. This is because it has already contained the coronavirus pandemic.
The Bundesliga defending champions, Bayern Munich will host Real Madrid at the Allianz Arena. Thereafter, Real Madrid will play against the Inter Millan at Santiago Bernabeu stadium. Inter Millan will host Bayern Munich at the San Siro stadium.
The healthcare professionals who have been at the forefront in fighting the coronavirus pandemic are the guests of the mentioned. However, the matches will be scheduled to take place when it is safe for the football fans to return.
“FC Bayern sees its contribution as a symbol of support for a united Europe, in which everyone takes responsibility for each other,” said Bayern’s statement.
Karl-Heinz Rummenigge who is the Bayern Munich Chairman added: “Despite all the suffering and all the problems, we in Germany are perhaps fortunate that our healthcare system is proving resilient in this crisis. But we have also seen horrifying images from Italy and Spain, both countries among those hardest hit in Europe by the pandemic.”
The coronavirus pandemic had hit Italy, Germany, and Spain hardly. Having a welfare tournament is a perfect idea to show that there is solidarity in European countries. More so, Germany excluding itself in the list of the countries that will benefit from the funds collected is a true sign of solidarity.
In a statement from Real Madrid: “The three clubs want to show these heroes our solidarity, our respect, and our gratitude. The three clubs want to transmit a message of solidarity and brotherhood among the peoples of Europe.”
The State of the Leagues in three countries
Meanwhile, Germany’s Bundesliga returned on the weekend with a new reality in the pitch. The players maintain social distancing during goal celebrations and substitutes wearing masks while on the bench.
Serie A is still suspended. The Italian government banned all sports events until June 14 makes the league be on hold until 15th June.
On the other hand, the top two tier leagues in Spanish football has resumed training. La Liga president Javier Tebas stated that June 12 is the potential date which the league can restart.
