Lucas Vazquez will miss the rest of the season

Real Madrid confirmed that Lucas Vazquez suffered a cruciate ligament injury during the match against Barcelona on Saturday. Vazquez went down after a tough challenge with Barcelona midfielder Sergio Busquets and had to be replaced at the end of the first half as his side went on to beat their opponents 2-1. It has not yet been determined for how long the winger will be out of action. But Vazquez will miss the rest of the campaign after the injury was confirmed. A statement on the club’s website read: “Based on tests performed today on Lucas Vazquez by Real Madrid medical services, he was diagnosed with a sprain to the posterior cruciate ligament in his left knee. Lucas’ recovery will continue to be assessed.”

The winger said he’s ‘gutted’

The Spain international said he is “gutted” by the news but has pledged to support the capital club from the sidelines as they hope to keep their challenge for LaLiga and the Champions League. He posted on Instagram: “I will have to help the team from the sidelines for a while. Gutted, but never down. If there is anything this club has taught me, it is always to fight. From now on, I’m giving everything I can to be back as soon as possible and help this team in the final stages. Thank you all for your messages and support. One objective is to keep fighting for LaLiga and the UEFA Champions League”. The 29-year-old could be on his way out of the Santiago Bernabeu as his contract expires at the end of the season.

Manchester United and Chelsea were linked to a winger who came through the Madrid youth system before making his senior break in 2015. Vazquez has been a critical player on Zinedine Zidane’s side this season, scoring two goals and making five assists in 24 LaLiga appearances. The winger helped his side take the lead in the first 15 minutes of the weekend’s LaLiga meeting.
