Manchester United have a chance to win Europa League

Rio Ferdinand says the Europa League triumph could create a new winning way at Manchester United after eight years of irregular success in the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era. United could end a successful season by winning the second-tier club competition in Europe this month, already securing a third place in the Premier League to advance to the Champions League. Last week, Solskjaer filed a significantly revised lineup in the return leg of his side’s last 16 tie against LASK, as they went into a clash with a 5-0 aggregate lead. Goals from Jesse Lingard and Anthony Martial brought the Red Devils a 2-1 home win to keep their confidence high as they head to the quarter-finals where they are set to face Copenhagen.

The Red Devils are missing major trophies for the past seven or eight years

Ferdinand believes Solskjaer could use the Europa League as a springboard for big things if Manchester United could win in Germany this month after watching his old club go three years without winning a single piece of trophy “It could be part of building a new culture in the football club,” Rio told journalists. “I think the club has been missing this for the past seven to eight years. It is the sustained period of victory you are looking for what a sporadic trophy here and there. It’s tough for the league on an annual basis and then getting their foot in the finals every year. If they can get that culture with these young players and how Ole is trying to shape this team. We’ll be in for a good future, but we have to follow through.”

Man United won the 2017 Europa League under Jose Mourinho. Ferdinand is confident that Solskjaer, this time, will lead the team to the last four but cautioned against complacency as he heads into a direct knockout clash with Copenhagen. Ferdinand expects the Norwegian to take several home names back to his starting XI after beating LASK. Rio added: “It was a case of resting some players for a game that fits. So I think he will be the three Ms up top Martial, Marcus Rashford, Mason Greenwood. I don’t want to see anyone else there and Bruno Fernandes behind that. I want Utd Man to come through, but if your head isn’t on him and you expect you to win easily, you can very much come a cropper.”
