Lewy is chipping away at Gerd Muller’s record

Robert Lewandowski can emulate Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, breaking through the 40-goal barrier in a season, says Mario Gomez, and Bayern Munich’s star striker is considered to be ageing “like fine wine.” At the age of 32, the Poland international striker stands on the brink of breaking another record. He has 39 efforts to get his name in the German top flight this season, leaving him with one short of Gerd Muller’s history-making haul for a single campaign and within touching distance of the mark that other all-time greats have previously hit in LaLiga. Former Bayern striker Gomez said: “The fact that he is chipping away at Muller’s record in a season without a much of a pre-season and under extreme stress is quite remarkable. It shows that he is a complete professional with an excellent understanding of his own body.”

The Polish striker scored 46 goals in 38 appearances

“I expected the 40 goal mark to drop at some point. The Bavarians have dominated the Bundesliga for years, just like Barcelona and Real Madrid in Spain – where Messi scored 50 goals in a season, Ronaldo 48. I wish Lewandowski many more goals because you cannot replace that feeling with anything.” Lewandowski’s efforts this season seen him record 46 goals in 38 appearances, having hit 55 in all competitions in 2019-20. Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich have two more games left. Every chance that standing among the best finishers in the business will be even more cemented by a modern-day great before the campaign ends.

According to Gomez, Robert will continue to play at this level for another four to five years

“We strikers always want to score a goal. That’s how we were born. For us, there is no greater feeling on the field than scoring a goal,” added Gomez. “I had that feeling as a kid when I played, and later in training and games. And I think it’s similar to Robert. He’s a striker through and through. When I met him by chance recently, I told him: “You are one of those exceptional players who age like fine wine. Like Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi and Zlatan Ibrahimovic. I believe he will continue to play at this level for another four to five years. It was not like that for me in my mid-30s. I was a striker who lived on my dynamism, on the first few yards of pace, for strength.”

“He is completely different. He has everything in his repertoire. Lewy is not just a sprinter, and he is the most complete striker in the world. It’s crazy how easy he makes goals look. I have been at Bayern for four years, and I know how hard it is in reality.”
