Timo Werner is on his way to the Blues

Timo Werner heads to Chelsea, former Blues boss Roberto Di Matteo expects the player he tried to sign twice in the past will be a “guarantee of goals” for Chelsea. A big-money move for Germany international striker has been on the cards for some time. He was considered to have outgrown the environment at RB Leipzig – with his time in the Bundesliga, the outfit ended in the style of the final day of the 2019-20 campaign, as he became the club’s leading scorer all the time. Leading parties across Europe lined up to battle it for a valuable signature, with Liverpool considered the leader of the chase for some time. However, Frank Lampard convinced Roman Abramovich that Werner would be a useful addition at Stamford Bridge and triggered a £54 million ($68 million) release clause in a 24-old’s contract.

Werner is good, fast and technically well

Di Matteo, who starred for Chelsea as a player before returning later as a boss, believes the Blues are getting quite a bit of talent, while the Italian was a big fan for a while. He told the official site of the west London club: “When I was at Schalke, he was at Stuttgart and just went on stage. During the second part of the campaign, before I left, I planned with my sporting director. I said that I want to sign this guy, he is good. He was young, fast, technically good. I said: “Can we not sign this boy, Timo. We did not in the end, and then I resigned and so on. Then I went to Villa. Stuttgart, the season after, they got relegated, and so I again asked to sign him, but then Leipzig signed him on.”

Werner will hope to run out to the site when he contacts Chelsea, while Di Matteo is confident that the prolific marksman can make a positive impression in the Premier League. The man who led the Blues to the glory of the Champions League in 2012 added: “I am a big fan of him, and he developed well. He’s a scorer, he scores goals, so Timo can guarantee a certain number of goals for the team, which is very good, and he is very pacey and fast.”
