Koeman loves to play beautifully

Ronald Koeman is the perfect coach for Barcelona as, along with his strong ties with the club since playing days, he “loves to play beautifully but also wants to win,” says Roy Makaay. The Blaugrana turned to a familiar face for inspiration after suffering a humble end to their 2019-20 campaign. Quique Setien failed to deliver a third consecutive LaLiga title at Camp Nou. At the same time, an 8-2 defeat to eventual winners Bayern Munich caused a stunning collapse of the Catalan giants in the Champions League. Koeman was called upon to correct these mistakes. So the legendary Dutchman was well aware of the expectations that exist in one of the largest football clubs in the world. He helped achieve success with Johan Cruyff’s Dream Team in the 1990s and is now looking to replicate those achievements as a coach.

It has always been his dream to coach Barcelona

Makaay believes that his fellow countryman can carry out the most demanding assignments: Koeman’s philosophy coincides with the philosophy of the institution of which he is now apart. “Koeman’s dream has always been to coach Barcelona,” Makaay told reporters. “It doesn’t surprise me that such a club thought about Koeman because he is a great manager. We will see what style of play the Dutchman gives. He is a coach who loves to play beautifully, but who also wants to win”. Koeman has the desire and tactical know-how to succeed in Camp Nou. But he needs an unfinished team to improve his game. He has already begun trying to put his stamp on things. With some players reportedly saying they no longer feature in Barça’s long-term plans.

Further additions to the ranks are also expected in the current transfer window while working hard to retain talismanic captain Leo Messi. And Makaay acknowledges that the aging squad needs a significant upgrade. He added: “I think Barcelona needs younger players”. The Blaugrana are trying to make this happen as they are linked with the likes of Inter striker Lautaro Martinez and Manchester City defender Eric Garcia. Still, the funds are in shortage, and restore the former glory for Koeman will not be easy.
