Scott Carson made a history in the match between City and Newcastle
Scott Carson over the moon for a chance to play
The 35-year-old hasn’t started a Premier League game since May 2011 but was a shock title on the Pep Guardiola roster for City’s first game since securing the Premier League title. Scott Carson has been on loan at Etihad Stadium from Championship side Derby for the past two seasons but hasn’t made an older appearance before. Scott’s last Premier League match was also against Newcastle at St James’ Park on May 22, 2011, with an interval of 3,645 days, the longest goalkeeper match in Premier League history.
Talking about his surprise recall, Scott said he’s over the moon for a chance to play. There was a chance he could have played last season, but Ederson was looking for the Golden Glove. The goalkeeping coach also said he was yesterday, so he is obviously ecstatic and thinks his Premier League days are over, but luckily Scott never gave up and still has a chance tonight. According to Carson, I was surprised, but since he was here, he just tried to work as hard as possible and be there if necessary, and luckily the manager saw it and gave him the game tonight.
Guardiola preferred to give a chance to some players
With the Premier League hardwired and the Champions League finals gearing up for it, it comes as little surprise that Pep Guardiola chose to give some of the squad a shot. However, it was still a surprise to see Scott selected ahead of the usual understudy Zack Steffen, but this is a reward for two years of patient waiting in the wings. The former England goalkeeper’s last competitive appearance came over two years ago for Derby against Sheffield Wednesday in the Championship, and he arrived at the Etihad knowing he wouldn’t see much playing time. With Derby and City contracts expiring at the end of the season, Carson’s future beyond 2020-21 is unknown.
