Solskjaer has ruled out Zlatan Ibrahimović return to Manchester United. The striker had shown interests of coming back to Old Trafford when his contract with LA Galaxy expires in November.
The Swedish striker made success at United before he left in March 2018. However, Solskjaer feels his time at Old Trafford has expired.
“I don’t think that will happen,” said the United boss. “He had a great time with the club and he has had a fantastic career, but I would not expect that. “Zlatan had a great time here, and he is still doing well. It’s unfortunate he got his injury here.”
Manchester United defender: Chris Smalling
Still, on transfer, Solskjaer claimed he is letting Chris Smalling join Roma on loan at a fee of £2.7m. Smalling, 29, joined United from Fulham in 2010 and extended his contract at Old Trafford to 2022 December.
On Smalling, Solskjaer said, “it just came up in the last couple of days and it’s just an opportunity for Chris.”
“We sat down and discussed it and at the moment we have six center-backs. “I couldn’t promise Chris regular football. He is on the plane now and he will enjoy the experience over there.”
“Not many English players have the chance to play in Italy and I’m sure he will come back stronger and better for it.”
“We’ve got a squad now that is less in numbers but still big and strong enough to have coverage in all positions,” added Solskjaer. He as well confirmed the Italian right-back Matteo Darmian is likely to return to his homeland.
Smalling is the fifth high-profile departure from the Red Devils this summer with Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez going to Inter and Ander Herrera leaving after their contracts expired.
“Alexis needed to go”
“Alexis Sanchez needed to go. His 18 months in Old Trafford did not work out for him.” United boss said.
“For him as well, to restart and get himself playing regularly, getting himself scoring goals, that loan will only benefit everyone in the end.”
“We’re going to watch every weekend now to see Romelu and Alexis playing together. We had a decision to make and I’m trusting Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood to be our center-forwards.”
