Thibaut Courtois received in Spain a ‘Tsunami’

Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois discussed the path he had to face a lot of criticism in the media, citing the treatment he received in Spain as a ‘tsunami’. The 28-year-old was heavily criticized in his first couple of years at Estadio Santiago Bernabeu. But he is now between one of Los Blancos’ most consistent players. “When you see where I’ve come from at Real Madrid, I experienced a tsunami there,” Courtois told reporters. “In 2020, I won the Spanish super cup with a crucial save in the penalty shootout. And then I read from analysts: “Thibaut deserves the Belgian of the year title less than Lukaku because he was always with the national team while the goalkeeper withdrew several times.”

The goalkeeper became Sportsman of the year

“I didn’t go to Denmark with Belgium in September because I was just on vacation and thought I needed to be better prepared”. Courtois also reflected on the path he was widely praised when he played for Atlético Madrid. But his achievements at Real Madrid are not viewed in the same way. “I had three fantastic years at Atlético and received praise from all over Belgium,” he noted. “I became Sportsman of the year, and I thought it was great. Today I have a feeling that everything I do has become normal. My performance in that match against Valladolid, I think, did not seem to exist. It looks like it’s not worth the effort to keep playing at a high level at the biggest club in the world.”

The Euro 2021 will take place next summer, and the goalkeeper is confident about the Belgium national team’s chances of success. “If the team have the best Eden Hazard, the best Kevin De Bruyne and the best Romelu Lukaku, then we will be contenders for the victory,” Courtois said. “I don’t think our team is worse than two years ago at the World Cup. Some will retire, others will leave, while others have developed and gained more experience.”
