The UEFA president, Aleksander Ceferin, spoke about the postponement of Euro 2020. According to Ceferin, UEFA has made great sacrifice.
UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin is expecting to face a huge financial loss for a year postponing the greatest European Championship. Though, he thinks that delaying the championship is the only chance to complete leagues and club tournaments.
“It is already clear that UEFA will lose hundreds of millions of euros by one year postponing Euro 2020. The European Championship is the biggest tournament for us.
It is held every 4 years and brings the most revenue. From this, it is clear that we have made the greatest sacrifice.” – the Slovenian said in an interview with the German daily Welt am Sonntag.
Aleksander Ceferin denies rumors
As you know, the Coronavirus pandemic has stopped playing football in almost every country. Accordingly, UEFA, along with 55 member countries and club association ECA, decided to postpone the European Championship last Tuesday. This will allow countries to finish the current season relatively late – if at all possible.
In an interview, Ceferin denied reports that UEFA had demanded € 300 million from leagues and clubs in exchange for a postponement of Euro 2020. “On the other hand, We were just promised that if needed, we would be in solidarity.
It was just that and nothing more. For the moment, such a promise is enough.” added 52-year-old Ceferin.
According to the Slovenian, UEFA has a reserve of 575 million euros. Therefore, they will use the money in case of the financial crisis.
We remind you that UEFA has delayed Euro 2020 due to Coronavirus. So, it will take place in July 2021. It should be noted that the tournament will not change its name and will be called Euro 2020.
