Barcelona need to ask him if Messi wants to play for this club again
Barcelona presidency candidate Xavier Vilajoana spoke of the urgent need to talk to Lionel Messi. Vilajoana has extensive experience in the club, working under previous presidents Joan Laporta, Sandro Rosell and Josep Maria Bartomeu. So now he wants to show that he is the man for the top job. “One of the first works I will do if I’m president is to talk to Messi,” he said. “We need to ask him if he wants to continue playing for the best club in the world”. Vilajoana, whose previous roles at the club included overseeing La Masia and the women’s football section. He was interested in highlighting the importance of choosing someone who knows the club well.
Super League is a very embryonic project
“It is a difficult time, in a sporting and economical sense. So we need someone who knows what it means to pull on a Barcelona jersey,” said Vilajoana. As someone with a long-standing relationship with La Masia, Vilajoana also spoke of his importance to the club and the current treatment of him. “There are deals such as the sale of Carles Perez and Abel Ruiz to buy Martin Braithwaite which hurt me,” Vilajoana said, citing the relatively cheap sales of two young players deemed to have vibrant futures and had an immediate impact at their new clubs. Looking ahead, Vilajoana was wary about one of the hot topics in European football right now, that of a potential Super League.
“It is a very embryonic project, and it is still very early days for this issue,” Vilajoana said. Meanwhile, looking back, he was just as dismissive. “I haven’t spoken to Bartomeu since we retired,” Vilajoana admitted.
