Yerry Mina has become a key figure in Carlo Ancelotti’s Everton squad, setting behind him a brief spell at Barcelona where he didn’t have much of a chance to show what he could do. The Colombian defender has had his doubters in England, often due to his lack of success at the Camp Nou, but he is winning them over with his performances. “I didn’t get the playing time I needed,” Mina told reporters, as he reflected on that period of mixed emotions after joining Barcelona. “It was a great moment that made history the first Colombian to play for Barcelona. Football, like life, has a lot of ups and downs. It was a big high when I signed for Barcelona. But for one reason or another, things didn’t work out.”

In six months with the Blaugrana in 2018, Mina started just four games and came on as a substitute in one other. But he is happy to have landed at Everton, where he is enjoying his football. “Sometimes there is no clear explanation of why things don’t work out, they just don’t work out,” Mina said. “But you’ve got to the point where you want to play regularly. And you’re looking for a way out, luckily Everton gave me a chance to do that and now I’m just really focused and positive.”
